My father used to interview me every year when I was a kid and record our exchange on a cassette tape. When I was about five, he started asking what I wanted to be when I grew up. I insisted that I would be “a doctor, a lawyer, an acrobat and a nurse.” He suggested that it might be wise to settle on one thing, but I would not be swayed.

That must have been how it all started: writer, broadcaster, wilderness guide, naturalist.
